STRESS. ------------ What is it?
More than 50% of issues presented to GP’s are #stress related.
Stress shows itself in many guises not just what many people refer to the “Fight or Flight” response. The “Fight or Flight” response is the basic response when the body has to deal with an immediate threat.
The best ways to describe these actions are, “#Flight” is to run faster than the threat and escape, or to stand your ground and defend yourself (#Fight). However, these two options do not cover other eventuality and the stress response does allow for other options.
There is another main response, “Freeze”
There are few #stressful situations nowadays need a physical response. In fact, running away or fighting will often make things worse.
Unfortunately our bodies or brain can’t tell the difference between a real threat and pressure at work or deadlines, etc. Our bodies get ready for action, #Anxiety, #PanicAttacks, when all we need to do is sit still, think clearly and feel calm.
The trouble comes due to the fact that the physical changes that were intended by nature to protect us and to last for just a few moments can be prolonged for days, weeks, months or even years if the stress, or stressful situation, is ongoing.
Here are just a few symptoms that could be stress related:
1. Frequent coughs, colds, and other illnesses
2. Digestive problems; diarrhoea, constipation, ulcers
3. Heart disease
4. Continued tiredness and/or being unable to #sleep
5. #Anxiety / #PanicAttacks and many more ....
Any of these sound familiar?
